It is said that just before we die, our lives flash before our eyes. This is true; it is known as living. For Jason Turnbull, this was a very brief moment because, just as gravity was about to do its job and drag him down the hole at an eye-watering speed, the strap of his backpack had snagged on one of the metal studs of the well’s interior, and had halted his descent in a bone-jarring jerk that had almost knocked the wind from him.

He dangled, swinging slowly like a pendulum over the void for a few seconds before his mind registered that he was still alive.

Once his heart rate had slowed to where he could make out the individual beats again and he had his terror under control, he considered his situation, which was this: he was hanging from a metal spike over a seemingly bottomless pit by a single nylon strap less than an inch wide. He then thought about what he had at his immediate disposal that might help him. This had amounted to one small flashlight in his pocket.

Unlike some intrepid explorers, Jason had remembered to bring a cell phone with him in case of an emergency. A device which now sat safe and snug in the bottom of his backpack, switched off, and firmly out of reach, lest he wriggle out of the pack and risk alerting gravity to his predicament.
